In fashion designing, there are some important aspects that designers should be well aware of, one of these aspects is draping.

Draping in fashion designing is the process of positioning and pinning a piece of fabric on a dress form, or mannequin to develop a structure of a garment design. Draping involves the transformation of design or illustration, into a 3-dimensional form on a mannequin.

There are some skills or basic knowledge about draping that fashion designers need to be conversant with, to express the fall, fluidity, and fold of the design. We spoke to fashion designers on the methods that have helped them during draping over the years, and here's what they had to say,

The creative director of Ninolastyles which is a fashion brand that caters to the bespoke needs of females, Oyinkansola Ileyemi shared this with us,

"In draping, it is always best to use a soft material. I have realized, over the years, that the softer the material or fabric, the better."

Ewa Balogun, the creative director of Kasewa clothings which is a brand that specializes in male and female outfits had this to say,

"Not all fabrics are suitable for draping actually, so you have to pick the right fabrics. Asides all the materials you need during draping, like pins and a steam iron, patience is also required in order to achieve the desired result."

Abidemi Adetiba, the creative director of Bibidisuityourstyle had this to say,

"A fabric with good drape is very flowy, meaning that is hangs straight down in many small creases and folds. When placed over a body part or any other object, it clings to it, showing the form of what's below it. Silk, satin and chiffon are a few of the fabrics which almost always have high drape, which means they can be used for draping easily."

As taught by many fashion schools in the world, fashion designers are advised to use any inexpensive soft fabric they can lay their hands for draping. Since draping is used to solve the design and fitting issues of a garment, before the actual cutting of the fabric is done, it is advisable to use a soft material, such as muslin.

Another important issue that draping helps to solve in fashion designing is the ability to actualize the design. Through draping, fashion designers can immediately see what their designs look like, and in most cases, they have a creative pull to add more flare and style to the design.

So, those are the importance of draping and some of the tips that help fashion designers!
