Amazon Launches Luxury Stores On Its Mobile App

Luxury Stores is launching on Amazon's mobile app, and eligible Prime members will receive an invitation, via mail, to experience the service. Not limited to Prime members alone, any other person who did not get an invite from Amazon can register through their new website

“We’re excited about creating an elevated and inspiring customer experience, while also infusing innovative technology to make shopping easier and more delightful,” Christine Beauchamp, President of Amazon Fashion says in a statement

“Mobile shopping is incredibly important for our customers. We find that the Amazon fashion customer overwhelmingly shops fashion in the mobile experience, so we began it with mobile, where our customer begins. In fact, in the past year [Amazon] customers have ordered over a billion fashion items on mobile,” she adds.

With Oscar de la Renta and Roland Mouret already on board, many other established and emerging ready-to-wear, accessories, and beauty brands are expected to join the platform with time. Though Amazon has 150 million Prime members, it is banking on more than that size. 

“We really believe this is an opportunity to partner with luxury brands who are seeking tools and a synergistic environment to bring luxury shopping into the future,” Beauchamp says. “Our customers share with us that when they’re shopping for luxury that they’d like it to be an immersive, inspiring experience. Increasingly they’re looking to understand not only the product itself but the story of the brand, the craftsmanship, the make.”

On the Luxury Stores is its View 360 tool, which is an interactive 360-degree view of features that allows customers to visualise how select garments will look on various body types and skin tones, with multiple models for each dress size.

It was designed, Beauchamp explains, “to overcome any shopping challenges pertaining to size, fit, draping, and whether the garment will be flattering.”

CFDA Announces Winners of Its 2020 Fashion Awards

In line with the social distancing directives enforced by most governments around the world, many fashion shows and events have had make changes to their usual program.

In July, the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) announced that its CFDA Fashion Awards gala, the 2020 edition of the ceremony, would strictly focus on awarding the top fashion creatives in American womenswear, menswear, accessories, and emerging talent, along with global design. On Monday, September 14, the CFDA unveiled the winners via its online platform, Runway360.

The winners include Gabriela Hearst for American Womenswear Designer of the Year; Kerby Jean-Raymond for Pyer Moss for American Menswear Designer of the Year; Telfar Clemens for Telfar for American Accessories Designer of the Year; Christopher John Rogers for American Emerging Designer of the Year; Pierpaolo Piccioli for Valentino for Global Women’s Designer of the Year; and Kim Jones for Dior for Global Men’s Designer of the Year.

Vogue Launches 'Good Morning Vogue', A New Fashion News Show

Vogue has announced the launch of its new fashion news show, Good Morning Vogue (GMV), that explores the changing fashion industry.

The news show was conceived in response to all that has happened this year. The pandemic and social justice uprising revealed the gaps in the fashion industry and inspired calls for radical change in various sectors. 

“For years all of us have been talking about how bloated and old-fashioned the whole system of the shows is,” says Anna Wintour, editor in chief of Vogue and artistic director of Condé Nast. “It was this extraordinary spectacle, but as a way to run a business it simply wasn’t working.”

GMV will explore "the challenges facing today’s creators and business leaders - from the nonstop pace of collections and the sense of disposability it's precipitated, to a persistent lack of diversity and structural racism" in a 12-part series that will air every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday of the spring 2021 collections. The series will introduce viewers to the changemakers helping to chart a new course for the industry and will showcase the joy that great fashion produces.

GMV's Premiere, titled Fashion's Wake-Up Call, happened on Monday, September 14 and featured a lineup of changemakers including Pierpaolo Piccioli of Valentino and Virgil Abloh of Off-White and Louis Vuitton Men, Aurora James, whose 15 Percent Pledge to support Black-owned businesses is reshaping the face of retail, and Brandice Daniel, who is supporting a new generation of Black designers through Harlem’s Fashion Row and its Icon360 fund.

Nigerian Fashion Designer, Ajibola Abitoye Named Among RBC Top 25 Canadian Immigrants

Ajibola Abitoye, the founder of Divineity Fashion Inc., has been named among the RBC top 25 Canadian immigrants.

Ajibola, just after 5 years of leaving Nigeria for Canada was elected a councillor for the City of Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, in 2017. Although with a background in economics and banking from Nigeria, Abitoye went ahead to get a degree from Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) to become a power engineer.

In February 2020, Abitoye had the privilege of showcasing her collection at the prestigious New York Fashion Week, only three months after starting her fashion line.

Sharing the good news on her personal Facebook page, she wrote:

Thank you to everyone that took time to vote. Y’all are the real MVP. I’m proud to announce to you that your girl is a 2020 RBC Top 25 Canadian Immigrant WINNER. Can’t wait to see what the rest of 2020 holds, it’s been a tough year for all of us but I tell you the best is yet to come. Cheers to this unprecedented year 2020. I’m not giving up on you, I still have a lot of faith and hope in this year. The best is yet to come! You are unstoppable! In this same year that people have completely written off is coming a NEW DAWN! The best is yet to come for all of us. Only believe.

Apart from Ajiboye, another Nigerian, Adeola Olubamiji was also among the winner of the RBC top 25 Canadian immigrants. She holds the record for being the first black person to obtain a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Saskatchewan, Canada.

She is also a senior additive manufacturing engineer at Cummins Inc. Indiana and the founder of STEMHub Foundation. Her Foundation is an NGO that promotes the engagement of minorities in STEM careers through creative, free, hands-on and minds-on STEM workshops on various STEM topics and one-to-one mentoring program.

They were the only 2 West Africans on the list. Other winners from Africa include Samer Bishay from Egypt, Sharmarke Dubow from Somalia, and Meryam Joobeur from Tunisia.

Rihanna Announces the Return of the Savage x Fenty Fashion Show

Popular musician and fashion entrepreneur, Rihanna, has announced the return of the Savage x Fenty fashion show. The show is set to stream on Amazon on October 2.

In a video uploaded on Thursday, September 17, Rihanna and Amazon announced that Rihanna's extravagant presentation highlighting her hit namesake intimates line will present Volume 2 on October 2. 

The short teaser also revealed the lineup of high-profile talent that will be a part of the event. Musicians including Miguel, Rosalía, Travis Scott, and Bad Bunny are expected to take the Savage x Fenty stage, while familiar faces including Lizzo, Will Smith, Paris Hilton, Demi Moore, and Bella Hadid will make appearances throughout the show.

Fashion Introduced to Dubai Duty-Free

Dubai Duty-Free has opened a new fashion pop-up store in Dubai International Airport’s (DXB) Concourse B (CB). 

The store, which features a curated collection of apparel, handbags, and accessories, is located in a central and highly visible area in CB, and is advertised by Dubai Duty-Free as “an ideal outlet for those fashion brands that are represented in parts of DXB that are currently closed”.

“Every retail space counts now more than ever and this new pop-up shop enables us to feature fashion brands from other concourses," Colm McLoughlin, Dubai Duty-Free’s Executive Vice Chairman & CEO said. “We believe in the fashion sector’s ongoing potential and using this space efficiently provides the brands with a good opportunity, as well as providing passengers using Concourse B with the opportunity to shop for their favourite fashion items,” he added.

There are currently eight brands in the new shop, including Coach, Michael Kors, MCM, Furla, Escada, Etienne Aigner, Emporio Armani and Ralph Lauren.
