As we begin an entirely new year, it is still important for fashion entrepreneurs to be informed about what other fashion brands across Africa are doing to stay relevant in today's society.
Our InsideAfrica column focuses mainly on African fashion brands, in and outside Nigeria, that are doing well, and are recognised internationally. We have previously looked at how Emmy Kasbit, Maki Oh and many other brands stand out from the crowd to stay relevant. Today, we look at Loza Tam.
Loza Tam is one fashion brand in Africa that has directly addressed the needs of black women all over the globe. And how is that? Stay with us as we take you on his journey of discovery.
About Loza Tam
Black women all over the world commonly have the issue of moisture loss in their hair, breakage and split ends, and Loza Tam, through proper research, addresses these problems.
How is that?
Loza Tam is a Ghanaian fashion brand that designs stunning head wraps, bonnets, silk-lined turbans and many more which keep the hair from rubbing against pillows. This, therefore, helps to prevent hair breakage and stimulates growth.
How The Brand Was Birthed
The Loza Tam fashion brand was started by Tomara Watkins, an e-commerce entrepreneur who has over 10 years of digital marketing experience. She came up with the idea of this brand when she did not have the patience or time to tie a head wrap even though she wanted to protect her natural hair.
“Really, I started creating products out of a need to make styling my natural hair easy while keeping it protected.” - Tomara Watkins
All the products in the brand are specially handcrafted by highly skilled women entrepreneurs in Ghana. And just like the brand owner shared, they would like to do their part to help close gender gaps.
“We believe in empowering women economically to provide for themselves and their families, and that is something we are extremely proud of.”
Typically, it takes about 8-10 weeks to produce an entire collection from start to finish for the Loza Tam brand. This is because they make sure to go through multiple rounds of samples before doing a full production run.
Grass Fields is a fashion brand founded by twin sisters from Cameroon, Christelle And Michelle Nganhou with the simple aim of putting love back into African print clothing again.
They create a range of modern African print dresses, as well as head wraps and turbans for men, women and children.
The Wrap Life
The Wrap Life is a fashion brand created by Nnenna Stella which designs headwraps, turbannettes, and bandies made with premium fabrics.
Since its start in 2014, The Wrap Life had been known for its quality and comfortable products which come in a range of vibrant colours.
Target Audience And Pricing
The products in the Loza Tam brand are designed mainly for black women with natural hair that can’t seem to keep their hair in place without ripping them out. Their products are designed to be chic and give off a confident look while protecting the hair.
“In designing, I look at colour trends and I also study women. I am constantly looking at where the world is going in terms of how women are dressing and the factors that influence that.” - Tomara Watkins
The products are also affordable as they range from about 15 USD to 40 USD.
Loza Tam is indeed one that considers the struggles of the average black woman in designing unique headwraps, headbands and many more.
